Cabins for Sale - Cheap
By Steve Gillman - 2009, updated 2012
Is it possible to find cheap cabins for sale in nice locations
in 2012? That's what this most recent update is all about, and
the answer is yes. The cheapest listing we found when scouring
the listings around the country was under $30,000, but we kept
all the examples that follow to less than $100,000 in any case.
Now, it may be true that most of these will have sold by the
time you read this. But it will give you an idea of what's available
in different parts of the country. This is being updated in early
2012, and we note the source of each listing we found.
Bismarck, Arkansas
Over three acres and hundreds of feet of riverfront come with
this two-bedroom log home. A five-minute walk down a small road
takes you Degray Lake. Covered porch or decking on three sides--all
for $40,900.. We found this one on UnitedCountry.com.
Alturas, California
Who says California is expensive? This log cabin, on more
than an acre of land, has four bedrooms and two bathrooms, and
is listed at just $95,000. It includes new appliances and other
upgrades, and qualifies for Fannie Mae Homepath financing with
as little as 3% for a down payment. Currently listed on UnitedCountry.com.
Murphy, North Carolina
A two bedroom log cabin built just fifteen years ago! It has
a long covered porch and a wooded lot. But it isn't too rustic;
it also has central heat and air conditioning. $95,000 is the
list price on NorthGeorgiaMountainRealty.com.
Okeechobee, Florida
Log cabins are on sale in Florida, just like most other real
estate. This listing we found on UnitedCountry.com has only one
bedroom and one bathroom, but it has fishing from your back yard!
The canal it sits on connects to Lake Okeechobee. It is part
of a cabin-condo development, so you get a swimming pool and
other amenities as well. Just $62,000.
Bare Hills City, Colorado
You might think a Colorado cabin is too expensive, but this
little mountain cabin is just $29,900. It sits on only a half-acre
of land, but hunting or hiking is out your back door. Listed
on ColoradoLandCabins.com.
Kingsbury, Maine
Escape to the north woods with this totally renovated cabin
on 6 acres. It borders a small trout stream and is near great
hunting, snowmobile trails and more. With its own generator you
can even live off the grid. The price? $70,000. On UnitedCountry.com.
Lewistown, Montana
If you like cheap acreage, this is the place. We found a listing
on UnitedCountry.com with 63 acres and a small cabin for $77,000.
It border BLM land, which means you have privacy and little chance
of nearby development. On UnitedCountry.com.
Rutledge, Tennessee
What does $77,900 buy you in Tennessee? A cute two-bedroom
two-bath log home two minutes from Wani Village Marina and Cherokee
Lake. You can boat, fish, and swim. On UnitedCountry.com.
In addition to the cabins for sale online and through the
usual channels, you might also create your own wilderness escape.
One of the cheapest ways to do this is to buy some land in a
beautiful and relatively unrestricted place, and then buy a cheap
RV to park on it. There you have an instant cabin on land.
Then there is the "prepper" or survivalist cabin.
If you are handy and adventurous you can buy a shipping container
for a few thousand dollars and have it put on your land to be
made into a cabin. These things are tough, offering protection
from storms and criminals.
